World War II

During World War II (1939 - 1945) Bulgaria, which initially attempted at maintaining neutrality, supported the Axis powers (the main belligerents were Germany, Italy, Japan, Hungary and Romania). In September 1944 Bulgaria changed sides and joined the Allies after Soviet troops reached the country. After the end of the war, Bulgaria remained under Soviet influence and in 1946 after a referendum the monarchy was abolished and the country was proclaimed to be a People’s Republic.
